Single-use plastic ban Canada

Single use plastic ban

Single use plastic ban Canada

Plastic pollution is a “global challenge”. Countries around the globe are taking initiatives to reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in oceans. Everyday news of aquatic animals dying of plastic waste is coming up. With ever-increasing plastic waste, single use plastic ban comes as no surprise.

Why is single use plastic bad?

Tonnes of plastic waste thrown away each year has become a serious problem. Talking about single-use plastic items, it does not make sense to produce a product meant to be used just once to last forever.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced last year that Canada will ban “harmful” single-use plastics as early as 2021.

He also mentioned
“As parents, we’re at a point when we take our kids to the beach and we have to search out a patch of sand that isn’t littered with straws, Styrofoam or bottles,” Mr. Trudeau said.

According to an article published by BBC, Less than 10% of the plastic used in Canada gets recycled.

In 2019, the European Union approved a ban on certain single-use plastics such as straws, cotton buds and cutlery by 2021.

While Government is doing its part to save the planet, it’s our fundamental duty to extend our support by switching to the alternatives that are available.

How can single-use plastic items be avoided?

There are many single-use plastic items that can be avoided. Bamboo products are gaining popularity to reduce dependence on plastic. Bamboo toothbrushes, cotton swabs, plates, reusable utensils, straws and many more products are available. These products are also a healthier option compared to plastic ones.

What are the benefits of Bamboo products?

Benefits of Bamboo products-

  1. Sustainable –  Bamboo is a sustainable material. It is the fastest-growing plant that is earth-friendly and extremely useful for making products that we use. It does not require fertilisers to grow and even regenerates from its own roots.
  2. Durable – Bamboo is even stronger than steel when it comes to tensile strength (which means it can withstand more tension or stretching pressure before breaking.)
  3. Safe– Bamboo is a safe option to choose as it is eco-friendly. It has natural antibacterial properties and is grown without the use of pesticides and insecticides.
  4. Biodegradable – It is 100% biodegradable. While plastic remains in landfills for hundreds of years, it gets degraded in less than a year.
